The trains and contents appear to be NEW/UNUSED in the original box.  We are not the original owners, therefore cannot say with 100% certainty the trains have never been run, however they show no wear in our opinion.  We have NOT tested anything, the set is SOLD AS IS.
There is an issue with one of the cars - two sets of axles and wheels do not stay inside the trucks, they keep falling out - the buyer may need to replace the trucks on the car (see pic # above for a visual)
The original box shows some wear - staining, small tear - see pics above.
