The smell is exposed to the extreme heat inside of the heating base from the insulation surrounding the heating base cavity. The smell will automatically fade away after the couple time's usage. For the beginning of the usage, it's recommended that you not cook any food, boil only water for a couple cycles.
And, it is normal to hear a chirping sound for the first time. When the unit is brand new and has not been in use for a while and could just be an indication that the heat is coming on. After it gets warmed up and run for a few minutes, the noise will stop. Think about this. When the internal heating element is heating up, and it reaches an internal pressure greater than that outside, it must release that pressure. It is known as the sound produced. At this point, recommend you to twist the timer to MAX and wait about 1-2 mins and see if the sounds still exist.
